On 12 August the Moon blocks the Sun’s light during the year’s spectacular solar eclipse. If you want to experience a total solar eclipse, you will need to travel to Greenland, Iceland or Spain, but if you would rather save yourself the trip abroad, you can instead head to the Planetarium in Copenhagen. Even in Denmark, the Moon will cover as much as 85% of the Sun’s disk, and it is the most complete solar eclipse we will experience for more than 100 years!
When you purchase a ticket for Solar Eclipse at the Planetarium, you can experience both a live planetarium show about the fascinating history of solar eclipses and the physics behind them – as well as learn more about our star, the Sun, and receive guidance on how to prepare for observing the eclipse under the open sky together with the Planetarium’s science communicators.
Throughout the day, our skilled science communicators will offer guided tours of the exhibition to explore the role stars play in making human existence possible. There will also be workshops where you can build your own solar telescope and kaleidoscope, as well as the opportunity to purchase solar eclipse glasses, giving you the best possible conditions for viewing the eclipse.
In the evening, a live Planetarium show (in Danish) will be presented in our magnificent dome theatre by University of Copenhagen graduate student Pelle Sander Rechnagel. Under our virtual night sky, Pelle will give you a preview of the eclipse as seen from Earth, and take you on a journey into space to experience the fascinating phenomena behind the event. The event concludes with the opportunity to join the Planetarium’s science communicators at Kalvebod Fælled, from where the eclipse will be visible close to the horizon, unobstructed by the tall buildings in the heart of Copenhagen. Here, we will set up both our professional and homemade solar telescopes, allowing you to experience the year’s biggest astronomical event in the best possible way!
We look forward to seeing you!
