“Staying on the ground serves us best, as the down-to-earth might say" – but in truth, we have no choice. Gravity keeps us bound to Earth, prevents apples and coffee cups from drifting off into space, governs the formation of galaxies and shapes the evolution of the entire universe. And yet, it remains one of the least understood forces in nature.
In this talk, Sofie Marie Koksbang, astrophysicist at the University of Southern Denmark, takes us on a journey through the history of gravity – from Newton’s law of falling apples to Einstein’s curved spacetime and today’s great cosmological mysteries. We travel from familiar, everyday phenomena to the largest scales imaginable, where gravity governs the evolution of the cosmos. Along the way, we explore why this force still challenges physicists and how it plays a central role in the search for a unified theory of everything.
The talk is based on Sofie Marie Koksbang’s book Tyngdekraft from the Tænkepauser series, published by Aarhus University Press, and is aimed at anyone curious about the universe around us.
