On August 12, 2026, Earth will experience a solar eclipse as the Moon moves in front of the Sun and blocks its life-giving light. When this happens, an enormous shadow will be cast across Earth’s surface, and day will turn into night while we wait for the Moon to pass and the Sun’s light to return to us.
But what exactly is the Sun, and why is its light so important to us here on Earth?
These are some of the questions we will explore when Morten Hector Dalhoff visits the Planetarium to talk about our star, the Sun.
We will follow the Sun from its creation to its death and take a closer look at how it produces its light and energy, after which we will journey outward to visit other stars and see how they differ from our own. We will also get a small preview of what this year’s solar eclipse will look like and hear more about how to experience it in the best possible way.
Morten holds a degree in astrophysics from the University of Copenhagen, where he specialized in the Sun. His research focused particularly on the violent solar eruptions that occur on the Sun’s surface and hurl material at tremendous speeds all the way to Earth, where they create the northern lights and disrupt our satellites.
Since then, Morten has founded “Down to Earth Media,” where he shares his knowledge of astronomy and hosts astrophotography workshops, teaching people how to observe our amazing universe through a camera lens.
