If you were to fall into a black hole, would you be able to see your feet as you fall? If black holes are, as their name suggests, black, how do physicists manage to observe them? And, perhaps most importantly, what are black holes, and how do we know they exist in the first place?
In recent years, these astrophysical objects have received a great deal of attention from both the research community and the general public, especially following the first gravitational-wave detection in 2015 by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). Despite this surge of scientific progress, these cosmic giants remain mysterious, and their properties counterintuitive, making black holes a perfect topic to explore, question, and demystify together.
In this event, physicists at the Niels Bohr Institute, Ariadna, Leart, and Lucía, will take you on a guided tour to the heart of a black hole. You will learn what black holes are, how they form, and how we observe them. Join us on this fascinating journey, where there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions, share your curiosity, and take part in the discussion!
